Plattsburgh’s Bike Sharrows

March 29, 2024

Last July, new sharrows were painted on multiple streets around the City of Plattsburgh. You may be wondering, "What is a sharrow?"

Shared Lane Markings (SLMs), or “sharrows,” are road markings used to indicate a shared lane environment for bicycles and automobiles.

Benefits of Sharrows:

  • Encourages bicyclists to position themselves safely in lanes too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to comfortably travel side by side within the same traffic lane.
  • Alerts motor vehicle drivers to the potential presence of bicyclists
  • Helps to keep bicyclists out of the “door zone"
  • Encourages safe passing by motorists
  • Reduces the incidence of sidewalk riding
  • Reduces the incidence of wrong-way bicycling

Together, we’re building a city where cycling is a safe, enjoyable, and accessible mode of transportation for all.
